Can I claim these items on my taxes...?
I will be starting student teaching this year and will need to buy clothes and shoes, can those be claimed along with text books and other supplies? Since I will be back in school, i'll also need to find a new job and quit my full time one-so can i claim clothes & uniform items that i buy?

How much do these things really matter for me when doing my taxes? I am independent and living alone.

Thanks

As a teacher you may be able to deduct certain school supplies that you purchase from your own funds. The Educator Expense Deduction, worth up to $250, is available whether you itemize or not. It was scheduled to expire with the 2007 tax year but Congress may well extend this popular deduction for educators.

Clothing is not deductible if it could be worn off-duty. Whether or not you would wear it off-duty is irrelevant, if you COULD wear it off-duty it's not deductible.

No you can't claim the clothes and shoes that you buy that aren't uniforms. And even for uniforms, it's very unlikely that you can claim them - you'd have to have enough deductions to itemize, and unless you own a house you most likely don't. Same with the textbooks and supplies. As a student teacher you will not be likely to be eligible for the $250 educator credit even if Congress renews it.

I am not a tax specialist but I do not believe you can deduct clothing and such. Anyway, your standard deduction may be more than what you can get by itemizing.

Clothing, even expensive clothing, is not deductible.

Uniforms, on the other hand, are.

Text books and other supplies probably are, if they are necessary for your job and not reimbursed by your employer.

The benefit will depend on how much deductible expenses you have. Unless it is obvious that you have less than the standard deduction, you should "do the math" and prepare your return with the deductions, and compare it to the standard deduction.

Last time I tried to claim medical work clothes etc.. it was 2,500.00
Anything after you could right off.

The only kind of clothes that can be claimed would be uniforms. You probably would not be required to wear a uniform, so clothes are not very likely to qualify as a uniform.

Anything you can wear off the job that is not clearly a uniform or special costume is not deductible.

You can deduct up to $250 on page 1 of form 1040. Expenses in excess of $ 250 for books, supplies, equipment, computer software can be deducted on Schedule A.

The clothing and shoes are not deductible unless they represent a uniform. The text books and supplies may be deductible as unreimbursed expenses on Schedule A (under Misc expenses) You have to way the standard deduction against all your itemized deductions. It's good to keep track, nonetheless - for budgeting and taxes. Job Hunthing costs (again, not clothes or shoes) but resume printing, envelopes, postage, mileage to interviews are also Misc Expenses. (All Misc expenses are subject to 2% of you adjusted gross income first) i.e. you gross income is 20,000 the 2% is $ 400.

Puzzled
School supplies you generally should be, unless you are reimbursed for it somehow. Other items (shoes and underwear, etc.) cannot be, as they are considered to be "normal" and personal expenses./
