Bill G | Can I collect unemployment while on severance? |
|
|

You can collect unemployment after your severance pay runs out if you do not have other employment. This really is okay because it gives you an extended period of time to have some kind of income until you find another job. For example, if your severance package includes 6 months pay, after your serverance runs out, you can then start to collect unemployment for another 6 months (provided you are not working fulltime). Also, a side note to this: you may still be able to collect unemployment and a paycheck IF your paycheck is less than what your weekly unemployment benefit is. You won't get the entire weekly unemployment amount, but you will get the difference between your paycheck and the maximum amount you would other wise receive through unemployment. |

NOPE, but afterwards if you're still not employed.
Take a week or two, then start your job search. It takes LOTS of time to find a new position, and it's harder when you're not employed. |

Check with your state. There are 50 states and probably 50 different sets of rules.
I've tried to look this up before and have been told both approaches are valid, so it depends on the state. Eg, you can collect immediately for up to 26 weeks or you wait until the severance runs out then start collecting for 26 weeks. |

Depends on the state you are in and the rules and regulations, as well as what is negotiated between the company and unemployment office . In some states you cannot collect on unemployment until the severance period is up. In others you can collect unemployment at the same time you get severance, but sometimes this reduces your unemployment payout, still in others, you can collect the full amount of unemployment with your full severance if you sign a release form saying you will not sue the company for any reason....There are many variations, with each state and company having their own interpretation and negotiation. |
