LowDown | Can I deduct everything I've bought for my uniforms and other stuff they made me buy in basic training. I'm |
in the Army and I've spent at least $1,000 on stuff for my uniforms and dress clothes and need to know if its tax deductible. I have all the receipts and I'm single and only claim 1 at the end of the year. |

Yes, it's deductible, but only to the extent that it exceeds 2% of your income for the year, and only if you itemize. A single person gets a standard deduction of $5150 for 2006 - you wouldn't itemize unless your deductions total more than that - 5150 is the amount you're allowed to take automatically without showing any proof of expenses.
Good luck in the Army. Stay safe.... and thanks for being there. |

Uniforms are deductible as employee business expenses. They must be uniforms in the sense that they are typically not used for personal use (i.e. business suits are not considered uniforms even though your employer may require you to wear a business suit to work). However, employee business expenses are reported on Schedule A (itemized deductions) under the miscellaneous itemized deductions section, therefore they are deductible to the extent that it exceeds 2% of your adjusted gross income. For example, if your salary is $40,000, only the amount that you spent on uniforms that exceed $800 is deductible. If you spent $750 on uniforms, none of it is deductible. If you spent $900 on uniforms, only $100 is deductible. My guess would be that your itemized deductions, even adding in your uniforms would not exceed the standard deduction. |

Yep, its tax deductible because its stuff you were required to buy for work that you wouldn't use otherwise. |

You can claim it, but you also have to report your military clothing allowance that you do get if you get one. |

yes they are but what did you buy for 1000.00 in Basic training as most stuff is provided free. |

Yes you can use that as a deduction but depending on the amount of your total dedutions it may be more advantagous to take the tax credit instead. Best source to talk to would be either your accountant or your tax advisor. Sounding like you are single claiming one so the total amount of your deductions above and beyond your military clothing will be key. |
