Can I deduct my contributions to my 401K on my tax return?

Rachel-Pit Police-DSMG
a 401k is a pre-tax contribution. It can't be deducted.

Check your W-2 (or your paystubs). You'll find that your 401K contributions have already been deducted from your paychecks using pre-tax dollars. So, you won't be able to deduct them again on your tax return.

No, they have already been deducted on your W-2 from your federal income (box 1) so you can't deduct them again. They are taken out of your paycheck what's called pre-tax, which means they aren't included in your taxable income in the first place.

If your income is low enough though, you might be eligible to take a retirement savings contribution credit - you'd use form 8880 and line 53 of a form 1040.

bostonianinmo
Your 401(k) contributions have already been subtracted from your gross wages. The amount in box 1 is net of your contributions. You don't get to "double dip" on them.

this should already be deducted from your paycheck. The amount in box 1 on your W2 will reflect the 401k deduction.

jaypez77
There is the Savers Credit you may be able to take if your income is within certain limits. Check out Form 8880.

A M Frantz
No. The main financial advantage to a 401K is that your employer is normally making a matching contribution. If you want to make retirement contributions with tax advantages, start up an IRA.
