If you are in the business of breeding or showing dogs, the legitimate business expenses you incur are deductible.

If you use dogs in the generation of income such as a guard service or tracking service, the expenses are deductible as business expenses.

If you use dogs for the protection of business assets such as guard dogs, the associated costs are deductible as business expenses.

If you are blind, deaf, or otherwise handicapped and have a service dog that assists you, all of the costs are deductible as medical expenses on Schedule A. The cost of the dog, its training, and all maintenance costs such as food, vet bills, etc. can be included.

If you're just a pet owner like most of us, there is no deduction for your pet expenses. Those are purely non-deductible personal expenses.

ninasgramma
You cannot deduct expenses for a pet.

An animal that is used in business, or for assisting a disabled person (such as a seeing eye dog), may generate deductible expenses.

celticwarrior7758
If they are just pets, no. If they are more than pets and you make some sort of income on them, or you use them as guard dogs at a business then yes.

welderrussell
i just read the answers you received to your question and most of them are wrong you can deduct any expense you use in your business this also includes vet expenses ,food and etc. but they have to be used to create income or business related IE.gaurd dogs, stock dogs ,show dogs etc. would suggest you use an accountant though as they will save you more money than they cost in the long run

Investor 2006
I sincerely doubt it unless you are in show business and your dogs are performing dogs. Then you can declare your profits and deduct your expenses. Even though, the IRA might want proof that your dogs aren't just pets.

If your dog visits people in hospitals and nursing homes, you could certainly deduct your own mileage. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

If you are receiving income from them or are using them because of a disability that you have. That help??

Perhaps if it were a business expense or part of a business

Go To website www.irs.org and you can look up the tax code and see if it applies to you.

You can deduct pet expenses if they are used in a business. For example, many businesses have guard dogs. If this is the case, you can deduct all expenses related to the dog as business expenses.
Also, if the dog is a show dog, you can deduct expenses, but you also have to claim winnings. If this is the case, you may be better off showing this as a hobby expense and itemizing your deductions.
You can also deduct the dog if it is a working dog, such as with the poster above.
You cannot deduct a dog that is only a pet, as you would deduct your children.

Mootron
Yes, if your dog is your business, like you showcase them for money or if you have a dog that is used to advertise your business.

I think it could only be a business deduction of some type. I've heard of people claiming pets as dependents but that's not legal.

You can't deduct for your dogs. You've been had. :)

Not unless you want to face charges of tax fraud.

If you were disabled and they were trained assistance dogs, then maybe...

Just Mee
no. Are you for real?!

081
Well technically speaking, you can, but it's illegal and if the IRS finds out, you will pay heavily (it's considered tax fraud).

So no, you were misinformed; you cannot claim your pets when filing taxes.
