Can I do my income tax return without my w-2?
I have my last paycheck stub.

You can go ahead and draft your tax return using your last pay stub, but if you are going to file a paper return (not electronically) then you'll need to wait for your W-2 because you must attach it to the tax return.

Information you'll need to complete the tax return:

1. What would be your box 1 wages on your W-2? This would be your gross pay less any non-tax items such as a flexible spending account or 401K contributions.

2. Your total federal withholding.

Look on your final pay stub at YTD amounts for each of the above.

Check out the IRS web site www.irs.gov they may have a way to file online for individuals.

PROBABLY NOT!

If you only had one job, no mortgages, miscellaneous income, other deductions then MAYBE.

What H&R block does, is takes your w-2 and projects how much your refund will be. Say for example, your refund will be $3000. H&R block will forward you PART of your return immediately and pocket the remainder. Otherwise, if there are any discrepancies on your pay stub from the w-2 you could get in trouble. The irs gets a copy of your w-2 and matches them up. :)

If you have your last paystub of the year, that should have all of the information you need.

A lot of tax offices will file your taxes with your last paycheck stub because what they are doing is giving you a loan and once you get your w-2 you will go back and actually send in your return to the I.R.S. If you are asking if you can send in your return to the IRS without W-2s than the answer is no. You have to attach supporting forms or at least a form 4852 substitute W-2 if you absolutely can not get your forms.

I should think so. In the old days before computers, the W-2 was essentially a receipt for taxes paid, so the IRS would know how to credit you. But with computers, the IRS has all of the withholding data from employers lurking in its computers, so a receipt is no longer really necessary. If you cannot lay hands on a W-2, photocopy the pay stub and send it in with a note of explanation and I imagine that they will find it acceptable.

If you know exactly how much you made and how much tax you paid, you can. If not: no. The W-2 is your proof, but as long as you have you have the information you can file. Just make sure you save the W-2 when you get it, incase there are any problems.
