If you have your last check stub from 2006 then yes. You can look at the YTD totals. You can electronically file your taxes on taxslayer.com for 9.95 Federal and State. All you do is type the figures in and it calculates everything for you. You will not get busted because the IRS doesn't require you to mail in anything when you e-file except the 8453-OL which is a form that you have to print out and sign saying you declare that it is ok to deposit your refund, mail your refund, or to have you mail them payment if you owe them. This form is simple, all you do is sign and mail it. The first day to file this year is January 12th. You can do them on the taxslayer site yourself.
Hope this helps and clears your confusion.
Dont go to H&R Block, I have to amend everyone that goes there and lets them fill out their taxes. Also, the answer above is wrong they have until March 1st to get your W-2 to you. |

You can...
I work myself in taxes, anyways, if your info is inaccurate you will just receive a letter....if you owe...then you can be penalized and you might then need to file for amnesty and amend your return...depends on what letter you get.
Anyways, if I were you I wouldn't spend the money getting H & R doing your taxes....doing a simple 1040 is very easy and plus you can even ask the IRS questions while filing it out...that's my tip. I usually have a co-worker submit my returns only because since I am so busy during busy season (yikes starts next month)...
I am astonished that little tax services offices charge so much to file a very simple 1040. But then again we charge $450 an hour but at least our clients have difficult returns. |

You might - however there may be amounts and numbers on the W-2 that you may need to enter. I guess you can try to do it online and see how far you get :) |

Legally e-filers are required to obtain a W-2 before they submit your return. If you file on-line, no one will know if you have the actual W-2 as long as you have all the information it contains. There is information on you W-2 that is not normally found on your last pay statement. Examples include: your employers EIN and the employers name, address, and zip. (these may be different than the office you know. Also note: the 'year to date' pay on your pay statement may or may not include pre-tax deductions such as 401(k). You need to know that to determine the amount reported on your W-2. |

I think you do need to wait until you get your W-2 since you really don't know how much you paid in State and Federal taxes, how much you earned and so on. If you put down the wrong info and amounts for these things, you may end up having to pay in taxes when you really are getting money back. You also may pay more taxes when you really owe less or get a return when you're not supposed to.
The government may do an audit on your taxes if they think there might be an inaccuracy on it and if they find out that you filled out the forms wrong, they could bust you.
I would really wait until you get your W-2. Really, they have to have them to you by Jan. 31st so it's really not that long of a wait before you get them. |

Yes, you can file your taxes even if you don't have your W2 yet. Any tax company can file, with your return, a substitute for W2 form not received (form 4852?) approximating your year end income and taxes paid.
If you put inaccurate information on your tax return, YOU WILL GET BUSTED. The IRS will send you a CP-2000 letter stating that you under reported your income and must call immediately to rectify.
Hey, you don't have to go to H & R.....don't like them. Any reputable tax preparer should know about the substitute for W2 form or you can file it yourself through telefile.
FYI---electronic filing will not be available for the 2006 tax return until after January 12th, 2007, in case you were wanting to file it that way instead of by snail mail. |

If you are mailing in your tax return (filing a paper return), you need to attach your W-2. If you are filing electronically, you do not need to send your W-2 in.
If the info on your return is not accurate, the IRS will issue you a notice. If you underreported your wages, the IRS will make an adjustment to your return, and if they have already issued a refund, will send you a bill for the taxes due. If the refund has not been issued yet, they will adjust your refund for the amount of taxes due. |
