Can I e-file if I file "married filing separate" ?
my accountant said she cannot e-file me and I need to file it myself if I go for "married filing seoparate"

Yes you can. There must be some other reason for your not being able to e-file. Your filing status isn't one of them.

Rob
Could you spouse have filed a joint return? that would prevent an Efile from being able to be transmitted, check with you spouse to see how she filed, you may have to file using a paper return and mailing it in, also if you had dependants that you could claim and the spouse claimed them too, that also would prevent you from filing electronically

I know, I know!!!!

Yes you can. I done mine that way.

Yes you can - and I don't know why your accountant would have told you that.

If your spouse itemizes, you have to also, and there a number of credits that you're not allowed to take with a status of married filing separately.

If your spouse has already filed his return electronically, then no you cannot. Basically what has happened, you ex has sent in his return as married filing separately, with your name and social security number listed on the return, since the IRS requires that you let them know who you are married to. And when you tried to file your return, their computer systems are automatically kicking out your return because your social security number has already been through their system. This happens all the time, unfortunately, with married filing separately returns. That is why you have to mail it in. Don't believe the above answers that say "something is wrong, must be another reason." They haven't had the experience, obviously. Next year, if you file separately again, try and beat him to the punch and file first.

I don't understand why she couldn't go to another person. I went to a lady who does it for the state for lower incomes and I have went to her for 5 years. Both my husband and I filled Married Fileing Seporate. She didn't have a problem e-filing.

momzadork
You can e-file doing seperately. I don't know why you accountant said that you can't. Let me remind you though filing seperately isn't always the best filing status to use. You should check both ways and use the most advantageous filing status for you.

I'm preparing returns for a friend using one of the software programs. He is married, filing separately. He also lives in Texas, which is a community property states. The software would not let me e-file because Texas is a community property state, not because filing separately status.
