To claim the earned income credit, you have to have earned income.

No, the EIC is EARNED income credit, so no income means no EIC. And you wouldn't get the child tax credit or additional child tax credit either with no income.

You can't claim EIC. Also, you may not be able to qualify for Child Tax Credit. However, you may qualify for the Additional Child Tax Credit.

You can't claim NEGATIVE income (a credit against 0 income). However, you should file anyway, to put in the IRS records a year with 0 income. Then, if your situation changes in 2008 and beyond, you can use income averaging (using the $0 income in 2007 to reduce your average income) to pay lower taxes over the next few years. Check with a tax accountant on this.
