Can I file child care on my taxes?

I know, I know!!!!

Yes. You will need the SS# of the individual who babysits for you , OR the federal ID# of the daycare center though. Take these things in with you when you have your appointment to file your taxes.

Judy1
You can if the person being cared for is your dependent child who was under 13 when the care was provided, you (and your spouse if married) have earned income for the year, and you pay the expenses so you can work or look for work. The person you pay can't be your dependent. There are a few other tests, but these are the main ones.

Judy gives a good answer but remember you cannot claim it on your tax return if you are paying it out of tax-free income, like a flexible spending account.

Yes, just be sure you have the SS# of the individual who does the babysitting the federal ein# from a place such as a daycare center. You should also know the amount you paid for childcare along with the address of the place where the babysitting took place.....

momof3
Of course you can,--If through a daycare they will supply you with a form to file and attach w/your return. If through a baby sitter she should be filing her income, I believe all you have to do is supply her/his name and get a statement from them showing the earnings the made --

Yes. Most childcare facilities will issue you a statement by the end of January telling you how much you have paid for what children. It will also include their SSN or Federal EIN#. If you do not receive anything, call the provider and request the information for tax purposes. If they do not have a FEIN#, they are required to give you their SSN#. At the tax desk you will need that, the person's name or business name, address and how much you paid for each child.

If your taxable liability is high enough, you will receive a percentage as credit.

Yes, your federal tax return provides a form for claiming a child care deduction which may reduce the amount of tax you owe (or increase the amount of your refund if one is due you). In some states this will also carry over to your state tax return.
