Can I file for my taxes next year?
okay, i am only 18 and i have been employed (with two jobs) for about three months. i was thinking that by the time next april comes around, i should have the right to file my taxes because of my income. but i am still living with my parents and i think that they claim me on theirs. can i file my own? and if i can, then with whom do you all recommend to help me out with them? and how much does it cost to have someone file your taxes for you? help me!!!!!!!!!!

You can file your own

I did it myself on-line, but h&r block has a good guarantee you should check with them.

Good luck.

At the end of January you will get your w-2's. Filing a 1040 EZ is really simple. Don't be intimidated.

You do have the right to file your own taxes, you should not only talk to your parents about this but call a tax preparer like H & R Block or something.

Welcome to the real world. Depends on where you go determines how much you will pay to have them filled out. Also, you can still file your taxes, it will ask you if someone else can claim you on their taxes, just make sure you check yes.

if i remember correctly, you can file your taxes if you are making over a certain amount that year, i thinks its around 3k. anything over that and you need to file, also since your living with your parents, you need to see if they were supporting you for over 6 months, if so they have the right to file you as a dependant. that also counts if you were a full time student during those 6 months.
Since this will be your first time doing your taxes on your own, you might wanna try h and r block, their a pretty resonable place, well known and i hear their prices are not bad either. i go to a small tax guy and end up paying around 70$ , dont lose your copy, do your taxes asap do not wait until april

If you have an income, and taxes were withheld, you must file a tax return. You will have to wait until your employer sends you a W-2 form, required by the end of January, and then you're good to go. There is a question on the form asking if anyone can claim you as a dependent, so if your parents are still claiming you, just say yes. I honestly don't know what come after.

Your tax return should be quite simple, so I suggest maybe getting whoever does your parents' to do yours for a reduced rate, or if your parents do their own they can help you. I use TurboTax Basic every year and it's really easy if you can read and follow along. It just asks you questions and depending on your answer will ask the next appropriate question.

Welcome to the wonderful world of taxpayers! :)

Tests To Meet
In general, all four of the following tests must be met to claim someone as a qualifying child.

Relationship test.
The child must be your child (including an adopted child, stepchild, or eligible foster child), brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendent of one of these relatives.

An adopted child includes a child lawfully placed with you for legal adoption even if the adoption is not final.

An eligible foster child is any child who is placed with you by an authorized placement agency or by judgement, decree, or other order of any court of competent jurisdiction.

Residency test.
A child must live with you for more than half of the year. Temporary absences for special circumstances, such as for school, vacation, medical care, military service, or detention in a juvenile facility count as time lived at home. A child who was born or died during the year is considered to have lived with you for the entire year if your home was the child's home for the entire time he or she was alive during the year. Also, exceptions apply, in certain cases, for children of divorced or separated parents and parents of kidnapped children.

Age test.
A child must be under a certain age (depending on the tax benefit) to be your qualifying child.

Dependency exemption, head of household filing status, and EIC.
For purposes of these tax benefits, a child must be under the age of 19 at the end of the year, or under age 24 at the end of 2005 if a student, or any age if permanently and totally disabled.

A student is any child who, during any 5 months of the year:

Was enrolled as a full-time student at a school, or
Took a full-time, on-farm training course given by a school or a state, county, or local government agency.
A school includes a technical, trade, or mechanical school. It does not include an on-the-job training course, correspondence school, or night school.

If your parents do not meet any of these tests, then they cannot claim you.
