Can I file my 2007 taxes before Jan. 1 if I have already received my W-2 and won't get another check this year

Yes, you can file your taxes before January 1st.

If all you need is your W-2, and you have that, you can download the 2007 tax forms from http://www.irs.gov

If you need other forms (such as 1099's from interest or dividends), then you should wait until you receive those before you file.

Unfortunately, if you're looking to get a fast refund, you are out of luck. The IRS won't start processing returns until sometime in February (since they need to reprogram their computers to accept the new tax laws). If your return is simple enough that you're filling it out yourself (i.e. just a W-2) then go ahead and file now. You'll have it out of the way, and if you're due a refund, it'll show up probably sometime in February.

I hope that helps.

No, the IRS won't accept filings before January.

Dont listen to most of these people.... the only people who wont get a speedy refund are those who would be affected by the AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax). Those folks will have a delay that moves into February. If you're filing a simple return and have all your info...you can file as soon as you have all the things you will need. Refunds will begin processing in mid January.

No. Paper returns are not accepted before 1/1/08. E-filed returns are not accepted until mid-January; the date has not yet been announced.

NO!

Many tax laws are not yet finalised. Software like TurboTax will not allow you to file too early.

it might not get processed for a couple of weeks and if you wind up having any of the types of income/deductions related to Alternative minimum tax, count on a delay in getting your refund

T L
You can, but I wouldn't suggest it. There might be other things coming to you that are necessary to have on your tax return. We have clients every year come in too early, and then we have to re-do their taxes because something else came for them. 1099s, etc. Filing super early doesn't guarantee you a refund check quicker.

you have to have a form and the new ones don't come out till January. This year filing isn't opening until Feb. because of a new tax bill that was passed. You can file before that but don't expect your refund until Feb.

If your tax return is simple, sure. The basic forms are available at irs.gov and could download and print them out.

You can't efile until 1/14 at the earliest. If you use forms affected by AMT, you can't file until 2/11. (The forms include the child care credit and the education credit.)

If all of your income is reported on W-2's and you have them all in your possession, you can file your 2007 taxes if the proper forms are available for doing so. If for some reason you receive unreported income before Jan 1, 2008, you can always file an amended return.

thegurlupstairs
Sure, a W-2 acts as a final count for the year. It will probably be better to file this early considering refund checks will be delayed because of the bill the gov't drug its feet on!

Sure, but wha't the diff? With Dubya and his war, they're just going to take all your money. Mustn't let the rich go with out, now.
