Can I file my federal taxes now and file my state taxes later, or do I have to file together at the same time?
I tried to e file via Turbo Tax and they say that my state isnt allowing me to file until a further date, I need to file soon because I am going to have a baby soon and really need the cash.

No, you can file your Federal return now, and file your state return at a later date.

Our state tax returns are not due until May 1st in Virginia. Hubby and I file usually file at the same time, but we could file them on different dates. As long as each is filed by the established deadline, it is okay.

Hope you get your return quickly and enjoy your new baby.

you can file them at different times.

You don't have to file them together. Either can be filed first.

wizjp
AS long as they are in by April 15 you can do them any way you choose

rich_schaeffer
The IRS and toyr State Division of Taxation are two seperate organizations. You can file them independent of each other. As long as you file by the deadline, 4/15/2008, you'll be ok.

nealeclark
Yes you can file them at separate times, but with many e-filing software the State return piggybacks on the Federal return. If you want to e-file your Fed return now, do not complete the state return. Also if you e-file the federal return separately you might have to paper file the state return. In some states it might not be a problem. However I know that if you paper file in some states your refund could be held up for a few months.

AmericanPatriot
you may file at different times. The state and federal govts. are seperate, so are the taxes, and inclusive tothat so are the payment timelines.

you do not have to file them together but if you wait until after the deadline date(April 15) you will be subject to a penalty if you owe taxes.

EJU
You can file them separately.

In my state you can file each independantly. Just need to have both of them done by April 15.
