Can I file my taxes in a different state from where I lived and worked?
I'm moving, so the question is if I can file my taxes in a different state, and also if this will have any impact in my tax return. I live in NYC but I'm moving by the end of the month or early Feb.

You earned the income in New York state while you were living in New York state, correct? Then you need to file a New York state tax return (as well as your federal return).

The state you're physically located in when you fill out your tax returns has nothing to do with it. You pay state taxes based on where the money was earned, and in some cases where you were living while that money was earned.

You can file from any location. The w2, and state tax are for the jobs and their locations, not where you live. Not in this instance anyhow. You can file for free using the irs website, and most states have online filing or at least printable forms and instructions online. Make sure you go to the post office and do a change of address, and notify those employers that you have moved, so they will resend out the w2s if they don't arrive by the time you move. If this turns into one big mess and your unable to get the w2s you use your last pay check stubs and additional forms shown on the irs and state website. The irs will not accept without penalties a late return, no excuse works. You can all them and speak to someone for free on this too.

It doesn't matter where you are when you file the taxes, you need to file for the State where you lived during 2008.

Next year you'll need to file one federal return and two (part-year) State returns, one for NY and one for your new State. (That's assuming you have income in both States.)

You can mail your return from any state. But you have to file a tax return for the state you lived in during the year -- NY.

Next year, you will probably have to file a pro-rated return for NY and whatever state you move to, for the actual time you lived in each.

You can file IN a different state but your state taxes will be done based on the state of your residency.

You put that new address on your tax returns, but since you did not live or work in the new state, you don't file a return for that state. You file a tax return for New York, and put your new address on it (or make sure you have a forwarding order on file with the post office).

Dr.Know-it-All
Yes, you certainly can. Just make sure you give your employer for that year the new address so that your W2 forms don't get lost. You won't be able to do much without them.

also, you'll have to file for the state of New York, but you can do that from any state, even out of the country.

hope that helps.

You have to file your taxes where you live for the year. If you move during the year you have to file in both places.

yes you can file it from a different state. it will not impact the federal tax return but it might effect the state tax return because ur filing it from a different state.

Worldly25
No You have to file 2008 Taxes where you lived and worked New York State.
