Justin S | Can I file state and federal taxes without paying them right away? |
I owe about 460 in taxes this year. 400 to federal and 60 to missouri. Can I file my taxes and wait to pay. if so what is the deadline to actually send in a check. Im hoping to catch a break and be able to file, get the 600 dollar rebate check and use that money to pay the taxes? is this possible? thanks |

It is always better to file and not pay than it is to not file and not pay. Of course the IRS prefers that you file and pay at the same time.
If you file a return that says you owe $460, but don't pay the $460 by 4/15/08, then the IRS will charge you a penalty and interest.
If you file an extension, the IRS still requires you to pay your estimated, or expected tax bill. If you owe money when you file your extended return on 10/15/07, the IRS will add on penalty and interest for any amounts not paid by 4/15/08.
If you file and don't pay, most likely the IRS will either deduct the $460 from the payment, or else hold up the stimulus payment. I have not seen any rules or procedures for these cases. The payments will not come from the IRS, but since the IRS will provide the information to the department that will send out the checks, I am sure they will let that department know who owes the IRS money and take their cut! |

Yes you can go ahead and file even if you don't have the money to pay. The deadline to pay is 4/15. If you can't pay by then, you'll be charged interest and possible penalties.
The stimulus checks won't start going out until May, so it will be too late to use them for paying your tax without interest or penalty. |

The deadline to file and pay your taxes is April 15. If you file for an extension, you'll have until October 15 to file your return, but the tax owed is still due April 15. The IRS is not sending any refunds until they receive their money. Sorry. The unfortunate way to do that, would be to charge the tax due to your credit card, and then when you receive the tax stimulus money, pay off what you charged. I'm afraid that's not the best answer financially, but it's the only way to "delay" anything. |

You can file without paying. But, the amounts are due by April 15th. The stimulus money will have nothing to do with this year's return. They will not even look at your return until sometime next year. |

Related questions and answers from the IRS web site:
Q. I owe some money on my 2007 tax return but the amount I owe is less than my expected stimulus payment. Can I wait to pay the balance due and simply let my stimulus payment cover it?
A. You should file your 2007 return and pay the entire balance due by April 15. You should not wait for your economic stimulus payment to offset the balance due. If you wait, penalties and interest will accrue between April 15 and the date the balance is paid, even if it is ultimately covered by the stimulus payment, which will not be available before May.
----------
Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced?
A. Yes. For this purpose, the stimulus payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the stimulus payment was applied. |

they will use that 600 stimulus payment to offset any amounts you owe on the federal level. |

The deadline is April 15 to pay the taxes, unless you file an extension. |
