You need to verify that the proper withholding is being shown on your W-2. Compare it to a last pay check stub for 2008.
You will not get into trouble for having no withholding it will just mean that you will possibly have to pay a balance due, or if you qualify for certain credits, you could still receive a refund.
E-mail if you have any further questions.

you would owe money, because it should have already been taken out of each paycheck. its not like you're in a worse situatuation because you would have been paying the money in the first place |
|

you'll just owe money when you do your taxes. you wouldn't get in trouble, the employer might, but it was probably a mistake
heidi is right, your not really losing any money. they are getting their money from you either way |

Regardless if the employer didn't take as much out as they should have, you made the income and didn't pay the IRS tax on it, therefor you will be liable for any taxes owed to the IRS when you file your federal tax return. You will not get into "trouble", that is unless you don't pay the taxes owed. Depending on your total income for the year, and if you had other employment in which you had a sufficient amount taken out, you may even out and end up not having to pay at all. I work in Human Resources and I know that clerical errors happen all the time with tax and payroll information. My suggestion, make sure any future employers enter your tax information correctly in their HR system the moment you get your first paycheck =) |

No matter how much they took out you will still owe what you owe. Why didn't you notice this each time you received a pay stub? It is your responsibility to make sure they are withholding correctly. |

Not enough information
Did you work as an employee 40 hr per week?
Were you contract labor?
They have a responsibility to take out taxes then match and send in.
QUESTION: why did you have them take out an extra $10.00?
Solution: Call the IRS and ask them, have your W2 handy.
Good luck |

Do you have your check stubs? Were they taking the money out?If they were taking it out and did not report it on W2's they are liable. If they were not taking it out of your checks you had 6 months to notice it but didn't.
I wouldn't trust the H & R Crook lady up above. |

Why would you owe? Well, that's a pretty simple explanation...
You have a certain tax liability for the year.
If enough is taken out through withholding to cover it, then you don't owe at the end. (And may be entitled to a refund, if more was withheld than you actually owe.)
If not enough was taken out throughout the year, then you owe when you file your taxes.
You're not getting "screwed" if you owe taxes. You still have the same amount due to the federal govt - you're just paying it at the end, and had the extra money in your check during the year. As opposed to having a little taken out of your check each time.
(But in the future, pay attention to the taxes being taken out of your checks. You can be proactive and catch errors in advance.) |

it was a mistake on their part probably...but not to be mean....you get a pay stub or have access to view it and it was YOUR responsibility to make sure you were getting adequate deductions....maybe you paid enough the other 6 months and won't have to pay anything...and no offense but if your in the army-your income is relatively low and i don't think you'll have to pay |

You won't get in trouble, but you are responsible for whatever tax the employer didn't withhold. Unless you claimed Exempt (line 7) on your W-4, or claimed a lot of allowances on line 5, your employer should have withheld federal taxes. Here is a link to the 2008 form W-4 if you want to look over it:

You may have made a mistake filling out your W-4 form, but that is impossible to tell unless you have or can get a copy of it. Since you did not state if this was even a full time job or total income, we cannot guess if you owe any tax or how much.
Figure out your taxes and see if you owe. If you owe less than $1000, it is a non-issue, and even if you owe more than that, there are a few exceptions whether there would be an under withholding penalty.
Since you did not provide sufficient details, any comments about whether you owe or not are pure speculation. |

You won't be in trouble, but will have to pay rather than getting a refund, if your total withheld isn't enough to pay your tax that you owe. It was your responsibility to look at what was being taken out - you didn't complain during the year when you were getting too much in your paycheck. YOU owe because YOU haven't paid what you owe yet.
Depending on just how you filled out your W-4, it might have been their mistake or yours, but that doesn't change things. What did you have for allowances on your W-4?
Working on an army post makes no difference. |

when you first started your job, more than likely might of by mistake check the wrong box for them to give you a full check and yes you can have them take out a certain amount.
Problem is now is that your going to have pay tax on all your check you got. your not in trouble or anything, its just your going to have to pay it back, and if you don't it will be on your credit report.
and they will let you pay it back in payments.
when you fill out an application they make it really confusing on what you need to check off and such..it is more of a common mistake than you think.
and no it wouldn't be your empolyers fault because you signed on the bottom of the page agreeing to it.
Talk to your tax person you go see they would be the best people to help you out through this. |
