Can I give my employer a photocopied P45?
I am starting a temp job, but I have a permanent one lined up too, starting 2 weeks after the temp. I have one P45 which I'd rather give to the permanent employers, but if I do a P46 for the temp agency I will be emergency taxed. Does anyone know if a photocopy is suitable or does it have to be the original?

Thanks

Sorry for any confusion - I am doing the temping for two weeks only, then leaving to work full time in the perm job, so I will only have one job at a time...

You cannot use photocopies of a P45. Only the original

Are you only working at the temporary job until you start the permanent one?

If so you give the original P45 to your temporary employer. When you leave there in 2 weeks they will give you an updated P45 to give to your new permanent employer.

If you're still keeping on the temp job as well as the new permanent job then you need to give the P45 to the permanent employer, and tick box C of a P46 with your secondary employer which will put you on the correct BR code for that job.

It would have to be the original as the chances are you will pay tax despite only being there for two weeks therefore the temporary employers will have to re-issue an updated p45 to you. Other wise if you give them the same one your tax could get mis-calculated by working two weeks and paying tax but you would have two p45's going through the system with the same figures on. This will mean when your original goes to your permanent employer it will show the same figures as the one a fortnight before and could cause you complications.

I'd just play it safe and give your temporary employers your original and then wait to recieve an updated one from them when you leave to join your permanent employers.

Thanks

Fill out a P46 for the temp job. And tick the box that says this is not your only job. This will put you on BR tax code for it. for the perm job. havd over the P46. As you have 2 jobs one of them will be taxed at BR (Basic rate) it might as well be the temp job as then you will pay less tax than having BR on the perm job. The perm job should have the tax code 522L

No a photocopy is not acceptable. The correct operation of PAYE, which means the right amount of tax being deducted from you depends on the continuity of forms P45. If you give the second employer your old P45, although the code number may be the same, the pay and tax will be out of date.
Give first employer your P45, then when you leave him, he will give you another, updated P45, which you give the second employer.
If you don't do this, they should both operate emergency code.
Do as you suggest, and second new employer will make refund not due to you, because of apparent gap in employments, and you will be underpaid at the end of the tax year.

Its has to be the original, i dont see the problem in you giving the temp job your p45 because as soon as you finish the temporary contract they will issue you with a p45 to take to your new employer

No, a photocopy wont be accepted.
If you sign the P46 to say this is not your only job, you will be put on code BR at the agency which will mean the correct tax will be deducted. Your main job can then pick up your code and previous pay and tax and make sure your tax is correct on that job.
Emergency tax on your agency job will mean you will not pay enough tax.

Yes you can as long as you get it approved to be a true copy of the originaly. you can have this done by your local police station. Just take both the originall and copy with you. The officer will then check it against the original and sign the copy.
