Can I phone the Job Centre to find out how much JSA I got for tax year 2008-09?
Basically, how do I find out how much income from taxable state benefits I received?
Do I ask for the P60 form letter?

Just call them and they will give you all the options and information you need. If they don't have it available right then, then they usually post it to you within a few days

ask your employer for form P46, and fill that in ticking box "B". this will have the effect of putting you on tax code 543L Wk/Mnth 1, while this is not ideal, it will stop you being taxed so much as a "BR" tax code.

You should have received a P60 when you stopped claiming benefits. If it did not arrive or you have misplaced it they will not provide another one.

Happened to me, started a new job about 6 months ago, after being on benefits for a few months, P60 didn't turn up, so I phoned them to say I had not yet received it and they said their records indicate it was sent out and thus could not provide a replacement. Said it was not their problem if it got lost in the post. Dumb idiot job centre.

Only if you were still signed on at 05/04/09. Otherwise you should have had a form P45 for each period signed on. Jobcentre acts as employer when you sign on. Duplicate forms P45 can't be issued, but duplicate forms P60 can, provided that it is marked as such. However that doesn't mean Jobcentre is set up to do that, and I don't know how long they keep the records. You may find that Jobcentre enquiry staff aren't really trained in tax matters. You don't say why you wish to know, but it is possible information held by tax office.
