Can I still file for 2006?
I'm the worst procrastinator. Call me a dummy but I knew I was going to be getting money back from the Feds so I just filed for the Extension so I could file after April 15th. However, the months have just gone by.. Now that I have some actual vacation time at home this holiday season, I decided to do my taxes.

Lo and behold, TaxCut won't let me file via e-file.. so a little web search reveals that October 15th, 2007 was the deadline for that... Ok.. so..

Yeah, I did actually do my taxes (finally) even though it's Dec 2007.. And yes, I'm due money. Can I still send in my paper return?

I heard conflicting info that Oct 15, 2007 was the deadline to file to get a refund. Others said we have up to 3 years. I couldn't find any definite answers on irs.gov.

Please, does anyone know?

This has never happened to me before. I've always filed early because I get a refund every year. This year, I just dropped the ball.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can and should file. You will have to send a paper return. If you are due a refund, there is no penalty. If you file your return after 3 years past the orignal due date, you will lose your refund. If you owe taxes, there will be interest & penalties.

Yes, you can still file and receive a refund. Missing the October 15 deadline means that, if you owed tax, then you would also owe a penalty for late filing. The October 15, 2007, deadline did not affect whether you are entitled to a refund if you did not owe tax.

The efile system is for current taxes only, so the IRS shuts it down after the 10/15 extension date.

Paper returns can be mailed in and will be processed. While the tax return is late, if there is a refund, you will still get it. The refund statute is at always at least 3 years from 4/15. So for 2006, you have until 4/15/2010 to file. (On a very complex return, there are a few items that have to be elected by the due date, so even with a refund, there is still a cutoff.)

However, do not assume that you have a refund until you do the form. And do not procrastinate. The IRS makes for a lousy piggybank.

Unless you were practically in a coma, the IRS does not forgive statute dates. (If you filed for an extension, but did not use it, you postpone the 3 year date to 10/15/2010. But people who forget to file, generally forget to file for an extension as well.)

You have to file within three years of the due date or you will lose your refund.

Ms. Angel..
File your return immediately before you file your 2007 income tax return. IF you file your 2007 return before your 2006 and you have a refund due to you, you will not get the refund until you file the 2006 return. Your 2007 will be held until your 2006 return is received an fully processed.

Alexis .
do you owe taxes, or are you expecting a refund?
if you owe, you should,
if you are getting a refund, you can but it may not be worth the effort.

bigdaddy9965
send it thrue the mail but i think they are going to hit you with a fee for being late
