If you have a refund coming, there is no penalty (but they pay you no interest).
If you owe them, the longer you wait, the higher the penalty.
If you wait for them to come after you for the return, you could face jail time... |

You'll suffer a penalty, but you can submit anything late. I've seen people submitting 8 year old returns.
Be prepared to pay, and don't expect them to work quickly, it is the tax office after all. |

I don't know how taxes work in Australia and New Zealand, but I would advise you to pay your taxes, no matter how late. You wouldn't want the government to come after you....unless you can run pretty fast and pretty far away. But seriously, yes, and you may have to pay a penalty. |
