If you do not receive a W2 you can have a substitute W2 prepared. You will have to wait until after the middle of February. You should go to a professional tax preparation service to help you with that.

travelguruette
Only if you do not receive your W2 and you have to wait until after a particular date in February. There is info on the W2 that is not on the paystub. If you want it done correctly get the W2.

No professional tax preparer will do it--if they get caught, they get kicked out of the efile program.

The IRS really should start hitting people with a stupid tax when they file this way--the 1040X is painful and not an excuse for impatience.

The ONLY way to file with the paycheck stub is AFTER Valentine's Day, by mail with photocopies.

NO - the gross earnings might not be your actual Wages to report on the 1040. You can't file your return until at least mid January and w-2'S ARE REQUIRED TO BE MAILED BY JAN 31, SO JUST RELAX . If you report incorrectly, you could get audited, fined, or best case, a long delay in getting a refund. The only way that is allowed is if you don't get your W-2 by Feb 15th and you can't get any help from you employer(s), them you file an estimated return, but don;t expect a 2 week refund filing that way

You may be able to file in the second week on January. However, you should wait till you get all the Forms like W2s and 1099s. If you file based on last pay slip, you may have to file amended tax return if there is any different figure in W2 or 1099. Read http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/04/list-of-articles.html

NO alot of tax people are not doing that anymore.

rich d
Yes you can but it is not always worth it. Electronic filing is usually not available the first week or two in January and the major tax prepares don't like to do a substitute W2 until the tax season is a few weeks in.

BUT if you must and you filed electronically before and have your prior years info you can get away with it. Just enter the information from the pay stub into the W2 form online. Be careful not all adjustments show up on a pay stub like group life insurance or even the value of a parking spot so if you don't know what you are doing the information will no b 100% accurate.
