Can I write off my 17 year old son who is still in high school?

Additional Details
I mean the 2500 dollar deduction

bluedawn
What $2,500.00 deduction?
If you mean the $1,000.00 additional child tax credit then no you cannot. (the new law cuts to the age to 17 at the end of dec.2005) -
Now if you mean the standard dependent deduction, yes you can still claim him up until he turns 24-providing he remains at school.

sure just change the locks and call the police if he tries to get in.

courage
You can take a deduction on him as long as he does not file taxes and as long as he lives with you and you support him financially no matter his age.

What do you mean by write off?

If you are referring to abdicating parental responsibility for him, then no.

Not as long as he's living under your roof. If you are talking for tax purposes, and you are providing his support then yes you can write him off.
