You will get a 30 day notice of intent to levy and your right to a hearing at which you could propose collection alternatives. You have to be timely or it won't help..

What do you think your special? OMG its such a hard year and i cant pay taxes. Don't you know how to plan one bit, its about the most important thing you have to pay each year, DUH! AND YES THEY WILL FREEZE YOUR ACCOUNT!

mckald21
Don't blame the economy for your screw ups. and yes they can freeze your account. Looks like your S.O.L

Worldly25
Yes the IRS can and will take your account. It would be better if you got in touch with them and set up a payment plan. The longer you ignore it the greater the fines and interest.

Yes, the IRS can and will freeze your account, take money from it without your permission, and garnish your wages. Not paying your taxes is a federal criminal offense.

If you owe them and don't set up a payment plan, yes they'll seize your bank account and possibly other assets. The fact that you "don't feel like paying the IRS this year" isn't going to help any - I'd strongly suggest you don't even hint at that to a revenue agent, or anything you have will be gone real fast. Setting up a payment plan and sticking to it is your best bet. OK, times are tough, but if you had paid them in the first place when you were supposed to, you wouldn't be in this fix.

How much do you owe them anyway, since you are asking if they couldn't just take it from your refund for next year? If you are getting a huge refund, change your W-4 so you get the money now, and use that to pay the payment plan money.

Yes they can and they will if you don't pay your taxes. But before they do that they will audit you.

The can freeze your account, and can garnish your wages.

A lot of people had hard years, and still paid taxes, by the way.

. . . .get a payment plan and pay them now. . . .they look at your income and expenses. .. . .then they can get the rest when you file 2008 taxes. . . .but set up plan and pay them, and keep current, don't get them chasing you. . . .not good. . . . .this is natural consequence of your past actions--face them

The IRS will give you PLENTY of opportunity to get on the right side of your tax bill. They only resort to bank seizures and wage levies when you ignore them. Put them on disregard for a few months though and they WILL resort to various draconian measures to extract their due, however.

You don't get the option to simply ignore them. If you are in truly desperate financial condition they may put your account in uncollectable status but you will need to provide them will full disclosure of your financial situation. Penalties and interest will continue to accrue but at least it will give you a chance to get back on your feet. Then, when you financial situation improves, you can get on a payment plan to pay off the debt.

Of course they can.

A few years ago I ended up paying in. It was enough for me to go on a payment plan.

Ask about a payment plan. They are azlways willing to work with you.

You should talk to a lawyer. Not wanting to pay because it is a bad year isn't a good enough reason for the IRS. If you owe them money, they will not leave you alone until they get the money that you owe. Since you are not paying, penalties and interest are adding up monthly.

Technically speaking, an IRS bank levy doesn't "freeze" your account. When the bank receives the levy notice, it sets aside whatever is in your account on the day the notice is received up to the amount you owe. After 21 days this amount is sent to the IRS. It does not attach to any funds deposited after the levy is received. Some banks do "freeze" the account, however--that is, they do not allow any use of the account until the holding period is over. The TRS has nothing to do with that, though.

As others have noted, your best bet is to avoid the possibility of levies and resolve your account.
