I think, 2020 is too far from becoming Superpower. I think from given current geo-political climate, india may gain the superpower status much before.
Tidbits:
Recently, India moved its troops towards China border. This step is taken for the first time since sino-india border war(1962). I dont think, it is a simple thing from Indian Standpoint.
Also, recently Indian Defence Minister and Finance Minister indirectly quoting that we need to overtake China in near future.

Yes , India will be superpower in 2020. Indian economy is the second fastest growing after china and this will continue in next few years. After infrastructure in place in next 3- 5yrs time the economy will surpass Chinese one.
The major factor is age of the working class which is quite in favor of Indian side than chinese and hence within a very short period China will be suffering for working hand whereas India will be most advantge stage. |

What kind of superpower do you want India to become? If you are thinking that India will become a military super power by 2020, I wouldn't agree. India still depends to a great extent on the West for its defence requirements. As long as India does not become more self reliant in its defence requirements, it can not hope to be a military super power. India has achieved a lot of self sufficiency in indigenous missile technology, but a lot remains to be achieved in other areas.
In contrast, India is big economic power house these days with burgeoning IT industry and several important acquisitions abroad by Indian industrialists. By that standard, we may expect India to be an economic super power by 2020, although that would not reflect on the general standard of living of the majority of the Indian population who would continue to live miserable lives in abject poverty. Only a handful of wealthy people would share the spoils of the economic boom. |

No country has such resources as India .The process has started .Check the economic front, Indians are buying companies abroad we have Mittals steel buying Arcelor french company then we have Tata s buying Corus and now they are in bidding for land rovers and jaguar company from Ford .Ranbaxy , Britannia , Dabur , Mahindra , Reliance , Vendanta ,Birlas ,Infosys ,Tcs , Wipro,Satyam ,ONGC are other companies who have bought companies abroad .These are few examples .The list is very long and is growing .
No other country could claim to have such a huge pool of technical talents . Indian software companies are now challenging the big names of software industry .Check the number of indians in organisations like NASA .The few CEOS to name are Ms Indira Nooyi ( PepsiCo ) , Mr Arun Sarin ( Vodafone ) , Mr Vikram Pandit ( CitiGroup ) -------
If the rate of economic growth remains above 10-12% for coming 6-10 years no wonder that India would be next super power .
No other country has more democratic crendentials than India .We have a diaspora of different religions , languages ,cultures ,races etc .Yes we would make this wonderful country the next super power .
Dont forget the strides India has made in Nuclear Energy and Space technologies .
