Stefan D | Can South Africans claim their tax back from the UK? And if so, how much can I claim back? |
|

If you have worked within the UK and are leaving to go back to South Africa there is a very good chance that you can claim a large amount of tax back.
There is a calculator which can be used to estimate how big you tax refund will be, it can be found at:
http://www.taxfix.co.uk/income-tax-calculator.html
I hope this is of help |

You need to submit a tax return after the end of the tax year in which you left UK. Your rebate will depend on how much you earned versus you tax allowances. If your earnings are less than the tax free allowance then you will get back approx £5K. If your earnings are higher than the allowance then you will get a diminishing return based on whether you earned greater than the current 10% rate which will disappear in April. |

If it's income tax for working - no
If its VAT on gifts - yes - you do it at the airport when you leave. |

If you earned money in the UK and tax was deducted then you can if you did not exceed your annual allowance. |

It depends really, if you are staying in the UK, then send your P60/P45 to your tax office for them to review. If you are leaving the UK, you will need to fill in a form called a P85 to let HMRC know you are leaving the UK. You will need to send your P45 for the year of departure and the P60s for any relevant yrs. There is no set percentage to get back, you will only get back what you have overpaid. |

If you worked in the uk and was tax and national insured then you just take your payslips and p60 to your local tax office and reclaim the tax that you paid. There are rules to this and i think you will have to go back to your country for a three or six week period. |
