YORLEE | Can You Be Penalized if you report more dependants on your w-4 form? |
Taxes have taken out a lot out of my checks because I claim 0 dependants..What can I do to have them take less so I can receive less? |
|

You could be penalized if you have a large amount owing...but that's rare for the average worker. I'm going to increase my exemptions on my w4 by 1 tommorrow so I keep my money during the year and do not get a tax refund. |

you really won't be penalized, but you will end up paying more taxes at the end of the season. the more you let them take out the higher chances will be they will owe you money. |
|

the only way you get penalized is that you may have to pay your taxes at the end of the year or send in estimated payments through out the year. as far as I know you can claim as many as you want. |

Allowances are for more things than dependents - can be for credits or deductions also. When you sign the form, look at the line above the signature - you are declaring under penalty of perjury that what you have on the form is true as you know it.
That said, if you claim more than you are entitled to, you might have to pay when you file your return, but won't pay penalties unless you owe more than $1000.
And by the way, unless you are a dependent, you can claim at least one allowance, for yourself. |

I think anything past 10 you have to prove. You may want to check with the IRS. |

You can fill out another W-4 to figure out how many dependents you can claim, but you will probably end up owing taxes at the end of the year. The more you have taken out of your checks, the more you get back--I consider it a yearly bonus. |

you can claim yourself on your w-4 which is what most house holds do. then at the end of the year claim the rest of your family. But really you can claim all your family all year but that would result in possibly owing the gov... that doesn't sound fun... |

No.
In fact the IRS want you to claim the amount you
figure that you are entitled to. So they will not have
to return you any money.
But remember way back in the olden days, in Detroit
when the auto workers claimed exempt or 99 dependents
and everybody got zonked.? (chuckle)
Well they checked everybody else too. It was a great big
scandal.......they checked me and I told them how many
kids, houses, deductions I had and they allowed me 22 exemptions.
If you claim exempt and you are not, they will shake their
finger at you and say naughty naughty and tell your
employer what to change you to. |

See IRS Publication 919 and complete the worksheet to determine the appropriate number of exemptions to claim on your W4.
