nancy | Can a 16 year old declare income taxes if no one claims that person as dependent? |
this person makes about 15,000 a year, but is underage what do you recomend |

LB
Anyone earning that much has to pay income taxes and should file for a return whether or not someone else claims them as a dependent.
I recommend the 1040EZ |

Richard M
His income is above the filing threshold, whether he is a dependent or not. Dependents are required to file a federal income tax return in 2007 if their earned income exceeds $5350.
Since his adjusted gross income was $54,000 or less in 2007, he can use Free File to prepare and e-file his taxes online:
http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html |

Othniel
He should file since anyone making over $8750 who is single is required to file. |

There are no age limits (upper or lower) for filing an income tax return. It is a matter of how much a person earns and who provides the most support. If this person has a parent who spent $20,000.00 for his support, he would still have to file (and pay income taxes) but could not claim himself as a dependent.
So, like everything in life, "It all depends...."
Just follow the instructions on the 1040 (1040A, 1040EZ), or log into www.irs.com. At $15,000, this person would be eligible for free online tax filing.
There are also a lot of volunteer groups he could probably get his taxes done for free. They usually announce locations/dates at the local public library, community college, etc. |

if you made 15,000 last year and had tax taken out you have to file. |

?
If they are living independently, they need to check with a tax advisor. If they are emancipated adults and self supporting, I cant see why they cant file a tax return. |

MIND THE GAP
They can but that amount is below the amount where any tax will be paid. |

anyone who makes more than $2,000 a year should file taxes |
