abigail_evelyn | Can a 17 year old file their own taxes even if they are someone's dependent? |
My younger sister is 17 and had worked for the last 3 months of 2006. She will be starting college in the fall and needs to start applying for financial aid for the 2007-2008 school year. She lives at home and our parents pay for more than 50% of her living expenses, so I know she would still be considered a dependent. However, when she applys for her federal grants for college she does not want to be associated with our parents federal taxes as they are behind in filing and it may cause her not to be able to get her grants. Is there a way that she can file her own taxes so she does not have to list our parents information on her grant applications? |

Yep and the best fed form is a 1040EZ and state forms vary from state to state. |

If dependents are filing their own tax return, and if they’re ... claimed as a dependent on their parent's (or someone else's) return, they can’t claim . |

If she worked, she can and should file her own tax return. She just has to mark that someone else can claim her as a dependent so that she doesn't get the credit that her parents already apply for. =) |

They don't claim themselves as a dependant. If there is income, she has to.
We have done tax returns for babies that had income. |

yes of course, if they show income and you can still claim him or her if you provide more than 50% like House, food, medical.... |

She can file her own taxes, just make sure she checks the box that asks " Can someone else claim you as a dependent?" But I don't know about the grants, my daughter got grants to go to college and she lived at home, but I don't know how she did it. |

The only way that she can file her own taxes is if her parents agree to not claim her. A person needs to be more than %50 financially responsible for them self or a dependent to legally claim so, if she wasn't more than %50 responsible, and your parents don't agree to it. Financial responsibility includes rent, food, medical insurance and, any other bills. Just remember, every person can only be claimed once. Hope this helps! |

you need to call a accountant in your local area. you are going to get a zillion answers here, but only they know your state and local laws as well as the laws that the college will be in. Normally, they don't charge for a question over the phone.
call now, before tax season, so its not so rushed and they have 5 minutes to stay on the phone with you. |

All you have to do is file your self as a student and you should not have to put your parents info on your tax form. |
