Can a credit card company threaten to take the money you owe them from your tax rebate?
Capital One Bank - sent a letter by mail, threatening to take the amount owed from my taxes, tax rebate.

John Scott
That's an outrageous claim and entirely wrong.

bostonianinmo
They can threaten all they want. Following through is an entirely different story though. They can't touch tax refunds or rebates. PERIOD!

nope that's the beauty of unsecured credit!

ninasgramma
They cannot intercept the money before it is sent to you. If you had owed back taxes or other government related debts, the government could intercept your rebate.

However, be careful where you put that money. I wouldn't deposit it into a Capital One bank account. They just want to lean on you because they figure you are receiving this money.

maggie
They are real big on threats.I have a friend in alaska who use to work for a place that did nothing but collections on bad debt. They use all kinds of scare tactics so dont let it bug ya enjoy your money.

Judy1
No, federal tax refunds can only be taken for specific debts, and credit card debt isn't one of them.

Keisha J
they can threaten you but they can't take your money out of your account

As others have stated, the answer is "no." However, if they sue you and obtain a judgment for what you owe them, they can then seize your bank accounts (at any bank) or most other types of your assets to satisfy the judgment.

perfectlybaked
No, only the IRS can dip into your bank account (besides auto-pay agreements).
