Can an American open a bank account in Canada?
I'm married to a Canadian and just moved to Canada. I don't have a Canadian tax ID. But I'd like to open a Canadian checking account. Thanks.

The answer is "yes".

You do not need to be a Canadian citizen or resident to open a bank account in Canada. However, you will probably have to open the account in person because of all of the new "know your client" and anti-money laundering regulations that the banks are required to adhere to. You should contact a specific bank to find out what is required.

At present, any interest earned by a non-resident of Canada on the funds in a Canadian bank account will be subject to 10% withholding tax. However, this is proposed to be eliminated in 2008 under the terms of the new protocol to the Canada-US income tax treaty.

There is no withholding tax on interest earned on a US $ account maintained by a non-resident at a Canadian bank.

rats

I married a Canadian and moved here in '96.Didn't have any problem opening a checking account but if you are going to transfer money from an American checking account the checks take 30 days to clear.Better to pay for a direct transfer. If you don't mind the snow your going to love it up here. Good luck

talk it out with the bank, RBC is a good choice. It should work

Good Luck

Yes. I did. See the banks for the info. TD banks and BMO are ok.

Do you have a passport and any other id or fomrs from the border they issued. I take you are doing in canada app. not a good move btw, i regret it immensley.

I was given a temp doc at the border and that was good to open the bank acct as was my us passport.

you do not have to transfer to cnd dollars and as of now you would loose money. if you have a us bank acct keep it and use the us debit card. good in the cnd banks.

It depends on the restrictions in Canada. There is no restrictions on the US side. You can open an account anywhere in the world.
