emmaloubeeee | Can anyone help me on this income tax question??(UK)? |
Im a student nurse in england, my university fees are paid by the NHS and I also receive a bursary of around £6000 (just below). Ive just got a job with NHS professionals as a care support worker to earn extra money-this is bank work so you work when you want. As Im at Uni and on placements I wont be working a lot just the odd weekends and stuff. Anyway I did a couple of shifts the other week and Ive just been paid I was taxed on this as I got abut £180 Ive looked on HM Revenue & Customs site and it says you have to earn more than £5435 per year to be taxed on it-theirs no way Ill do enough shifts per year to earn this much from the job as I just wont have time. So what I want to know is can i claim this back at the end of the tax year? As Im unsure if they will include my bursary in this £5435?? Do you know what I mean? Does anyone know? Ive tried contacting them just keeps saying 'high no. of calls etc' the websites a bit confusing too and cant see anything about bursaries? Additional Details its sorted-my bursary doesnt count towards it and i dont have to pay tax unless i earn a certain amount. So looks like all the answers were wrong! |

If necessary check tax position with bursary payer. Payer should be able to tell you if it is taxable. Alternatively there may be something on your bursary commencement documents. If I had talked to you about it when I was working, I would have wanted to see bursary papers.
As from your edit, it appears bursary isn't taxable, you should contact tax office of the nursing bank. Payroll can give you details. Tax office will want to know your employment details as from 6th April 2008, and then cumulative code number can be issued. Easiest way is probably to download form P91 from www.hmrc/p91. Any tax you have had deducted will be refunded with wages when received by employer. You don't have to wait until the end of the tax year.
You are very brave to decide on a career in nursing. I couldn't have done it, I'm far too squeamish! |

You to complete either P38s or P46 to get your code number sorted out, ask the payroll dept, you will get back any tax overpaid. When someone starts without a current P45 emergency code is used but this should only be temporary. Make sure you have your national insureance number to hand. |

You will be taxed on all earnings above £5435 as your bursary is an income however you look at it.
