Can high tax people avoid paying?
OK, I know this guy who works on the railways, maintenance not train driving, and he claims to make really good money, like more than £60,000 a year because he's some sort of supervisor. I said he must be in a higher tax bracket then, but he said no and that all the guys on the railways have some sort of legal fiddle where they only pay a normal tax percent. Is he bulling me about his earnings and his tax or is this possible?

Marky
Nah.

If he is emplyed, then he is paying at the 40% rate which kicks in around £24,000.

If he's self employed, he may be a contractor and then can offset costs against earnings, but thats no different to any other self employed person.

It's the "Public Bar" syndrome.
My clients are always telling me about this man they met in a pub, who earns a fortune and doesn't pay any tax, AND IT'S LEGAL.

It's B/S.

He is either being optimistic about his level of income or is unaware of his tax deductions. 40% tax applies to net incomes in excess of around £38Kpa and the only other possible explanation is that he incurs very high expenses that are reimbursed gross of tax and he has included this in his income.

Tax evasion is illegal and he would be dumb to do it in any serious way.
Tax avoidance is fine, and there are lots of ways to minimise the amount the taxman takes. Pretty well all you want to put in your pension is tax free, so if he is on a 40% band, then each £60 he paid into pension from take home pay gets £40 back from the chancellor. Same with childcare vouchers, to pay for your nursery etc. If you get an accountant, they can tell you lots of things you can claim back, not as many as in the US, but a lot. If you have to belong to a professional organisation to do your job, that is allowable against tax. I know people who claim the subscription to journals that they say are necessary for them to keep up to date with their subject. The richer you are, the more it seems you can get round the rules. Really wealthy people spend lots on accontancy to keep much more out of the hands of the taxman. Trusts, allowances on this investment and that. You have probably heard the stuff about the capital gains band in the news. That is all about people buying things that increase in value. If you do this - buy a second house then sell it for 100K profit in a year, you are liable for 40% tax. If you keep it longer, and rent it out then sell it with taper releif you only pay 10% tax. So all those with huge assets are whinging because if the rate goes to 18% they will have to pay more tax when they sell their businesses. Managing on 82% of an unearned value increase of many thousands sounds like a good problem to have to me!

Hmm, im on higher tax rate at 40% and i definitely don't know of any way to avoid it.

I think that guy may be telling porkies.

yes there are many ways to reduce your tax bill....there is tax evasion and that is illegal....its different to tax avoidance..which is legal....depends which he is doing...
