You can file taxes back as many years as you want. However, you have only three years from the due date of a return, or two years from the payment of tax on a return, to submit an original or amended return with a request for a refund.
For example, if you never filed your 2003 return, which was due on April 15, 2003, then you have until April 15, 2007 to file this return and get a refund. After April 15, 2007 the refund is lost.
If you filed your 2003 return and paid your taxes by the due date, you also have until April 15, 2007 to amend your 2003 return and get a refund.
If you filed your 2003 return but did not pay your taxes, until say January 1, 2006, you have until January 1, 2008 to file an amendment for 2003 and get a refund. |
