LIL' SON
Can i claim to be independent if i live with my parents?
I have a job
I'm 19
I'm not going to school yet
My dad pay insurance for me

Your can be claimed as a dependent in one of two ways - qualifying child or qualifying relative.

To be a qualifying child, your must:

1. Be under 19 (or under 24 and a full-time student) or permanently and totally disabled;
2. Not pay for over half of your own support;
3. Live with your parents for more than half of the year.

To be a qualifying relative:

1. Your parents must have provided more than half of your support;
2. Your gross income is less than $3400.

If you were 19 as of the end of 2007 and were not in school for at least 5 months of the year, then your parents can't claim you, and you can claim yourself, even if they support you.

*Me, myself, I*
Yes as long as your parents don't claim you as a DEPENDENT on their tax return(s).

If you were 19 on 12/31/2007 and you had wages of $3,400 or more in 2007, then you cannot be claimed as a dependent on anyone's return, regardless of who supports you or where you live.

If you had wages of less than $3,400 and your parent's supported you, you are their dependent.

If you were under 19 and did not provide over half of your own support, you are your parents' dependent.

Yes claim yourself as independent and your parents don't.

not really. I'd ask a lawyer, though.

They might know a way.

Yes. Just pay rent.

adharr
Yes, you can file. Just don't let your parents claim you as a dependant

Sorcha22
No. You're independent when you completely rely on yourself. That means live alone, pay for insurance yourself. Unless you rent from your parents XD then youre independent.

No, because you haven't finished school and you live with your parents.
