Okay....if you bought a computer for your avon business, that won't raise any weird, strange looks from the IRS. But if your claiming a gun as a business expense and your not in law enforcement or security not only will you run the risk of the IRS denying your entire tax claim you also run the risk of the IRS auditing you.

If you can prove that it was for your profession, then they can counted towards your tax deductions.

Usually, only those who work in Law Enforcement or Private Security can claim a tax deduction for a firearm.

Wow, Avon is more dangerous than I thought!

If a gun is usual and necessary for your profession (I'm not sure Avon qualifies, but if you were in security, possibly), it is a possible deduction. Be prepared to defend (sorry) it.

For the computer, you need to keep track of how much is personal use (games, email, YA!, etc.) and how much is business. You can deduct the business portion.

Hmmm... Need a gun to push the Avon these days? I used to have to use one to keep them at bay. My, how times have changed.

If you have a business need for either then they are legitimate business expenses. However you can't just write off the cost, especially on the computer. Computers must be depreciated; they're not eligible for the Section 179 deduction. And you need to keep a log of the use and allocate personal vs business use. Only the business portion of the use qualifies for any deduction.

ok...you realize the wording of you question will prompt crazy answers??

So I'll assume avon and gun purchase don't relate.

If you are required to carry a gun for your regular job then it becomes (along with uniforms and other unreimbursed job expenses) a misc. deduction on Schedule A. This deduction is subject to 2% of your adjusted gross income. What that means is if you itemize your deductions instead of taking the standard deduction you have to multipy your adusted gross income by 2% and if your expenses exceed that you deduct the amount.

Now onto Avon....you have to depreciate the computer over a number of years. And the amount you get will depend on hours of use for business vs. personal use. It is reported on a Form 4562. You have to file a 1040, Schedule C Profit or Loss from Business, Schedule SE Self Employment Tax and 4562 Depreciation and Amoritization for the Avon business.

If you not too tax savvy you'll need to see a tax preparer. Look for a local EA (Enrolled Agent) or CPA who does taxes (many CPAs don't) in the yellow pages.

gobbledeegouk
Both of these are depreciation and you can recover the full cost as a 179 expense but you must report on a 4562. Don't just expense them on your schedule C. It is also based on business percentage. If you use any portion for yourself or family you can only depreciate the business percentage. It is rare that a computer at home bet 100% business use. If you check you personal email, the kids play games etc those count for personal use.

If you are self employed and these are for your business use then you can deduct capital expenses under section 179.
You will report your income and expenses on schedule C or C-EZ (Form 1040). This income is subject to SE tax at 15.3%. Read about self employed (or independent contractor) tax filing and payment of estimated taxes: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/04/tax-filing-by-self-employed-sole.html

FRANK
Yes. Deducible business items. You can write off full amount, rther than deprecate.
