Can i do my taxes for free?
For the past three years we have been paying over 200 dollars to go into h&r block for about 10 to 15 minutes to have them do our taxes. Is there anyway we can do them ourselves for free? Its basic stuff, we have a w-2 form and that's all we have ever needed. We would also like to have it direct deposited. What is out there that is free and safe. We would like to do e-file. Thank you all for your help!
Additional Details
Im from texas if that helps anyone.

What I did last year was I got the free sample version of Turbo Tax. I did my entire return with it. then at the end, in order to print the forms or submit them electronically you have to pay for the software. I just made a note of what forms it used, what deductions I had, etc. Then I got the paper forms and filled them out, based on what Turbo Tax was going to do for me. I essentially saved the $30 by taking the extra 20 minutes to write the info down myself. You can do the same thing with E-file if you qualify (I didn't qualify for free e-file last year due to income limits, otherwise I would have done that instead of paper forms). You can still have your refund direct deposited, there is a place for you to put in your bank account number and routing number.

Yes! You can do your Federal taxes at turbotax.com for free.

My mamma is a CPA and uses Turbo Tax when she does personal taxes for friends and family. She gets the version you pay for - but either way, it is a food reliable program.

Depending on your income, there will be a number of sites linked from irs.gov where you can efile, or you might be eligible to have your return done at a VITA or TCE site (see irs.gov for info on these programs). Paying over $200 for something that simple makes no sense. If you just have W-2's, it's very easy.

Good luck.

Defintely Turbotax.com I use it every year. completely free and can be deposited directly into your bank accountl I have never had a problem with them!

They have all the forms at the post office or online. Doesn't cost you a thing.

Sure. I use tax act. They're at http://www.taxact.com. Federal filing is free, state filing is about $15.

most irs local offices would them for free. Also the IRS has different authorized e-filers who do them for free, but you have to pay like 15 for the state. Also check if there an organization called VITA the would do your taxes for free to.

Most people who use H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt etc. do not need to use them and are throwing money away. You can buy the software for about $50 but there are online sites that allow you to do your taxes for free. Of course, you can always get the forms free at the Post Office and do them by hand - I did for many years.

Sure, just go to http://www.irs.gov/ and click Free File. They will ask you a couple questions and that will give you a list of links to web sites that you qualify for to file for free. Keep in mind they make their money by charging for a state return so that will cost you. And you don't have the audit protection that you are used to if you are an H&R Block client.

Most of the on-line tax prep sites let you do your federal taxes for free, assuming they're straightforward. State taxes are another story. Check your state's Web site to see if they offer free filing anywhere.

Don't forget, though, you can *always* file a paper return for only the cost of a stamp.
