yes, you can file ur return for any noumber of financial yrs in current yr.
our income tax department is so good.
just they want tax nothing else.

but i want to give a advice.....
if you are filling return for finance purpose they will not be valid
as yous files will be showing that you have filed return on same date. and any finance department or bank will reject ur application for loan.

Where the assessee has defaulted in timely furnishing of his return of income or where he has to pay advance tax, then penal interest is chargeable for Non/Late filing of return or Non-payment/short payment/deferment in payment of such advance tax.

INTEREST U/8. 234-A FOR LATE OR NON-FURNISHING OF INCOME TAX RETURN

For defaults in furnishing 'Return of income': Simple interest @ 1.25% for every month or part of a month from the due date of filing of the return to the date of furnishing of the return. The interest is calculated on the amount of the tax on the total assessed income as determined under subsection (1) of section 143 or on regular assessment u/s 143(3) as reduced by the Advance Tax, if any, paid and any tax deducted or collected at source.

Answer to your question is NO & YES.

No because the income tax law says that you can file return up to one year from the end of assessment year. Not after that Therefore, up to 31/3/2008 , you can file return for

Asst Yr 2006-07 (FY 2005-06)
Asst Yr 2007-08 (Fy 2006-07)

This sums up to two years. A.O will not accept any return pertaining to Asst Yr 2005-06 (Fy 2004-05) or earlier years.

YES because -------------
-----------------
However, you can apply before Commissioner of Income Tax stating why you could not file the return u/s 119(2)(b) of the I T Act. If he approves, you can file return for even FY 2004-05.

Yes. u can certainly file IT return for the last three years. If you are a salaried person you should attach Form 16 issued by yr employer together with other investment and other interest receipts. U can approach an auditor, who will do the needful. In case any tax is payable , it should be paid together with interest. No need to worry. In case of company, profit and loss statement to be produced.

Yes returns can be filed, but with a penalty as determined by the Act.

as per income tax act,a person can file a return within 2 years from the end of relevent assessment year OR before the assessment is complete by the assessing officer WHICHEVER IS EARLIER.i wonder why the officer did not go for the best judgement assessment.anyways, you can file your return but you will have to pay some fine for non filing of return
