You can't claim tax relief on home to work travel. You may be able to claim something on expenses wholly and necessarily incurred in the performance of your duties, but there are set limits. I note your employer does pay you some expenses. Do you get form P11D for that?. Look at www.hmrc.gov.uk, individuals, then expenses in employment. That gives you the limits.
You don't make this claim through a Tax Return unless you have to do one for other reasons. You need form P87.

On the basis on the facts you should be able to get a tax rebate through filling in a tax return.

Say you do 5,000 business miles a year and your employer pays you 20p a mile. I think HMRC allow 40p a mile so you would calculate the difference - ie: (40p-20p) x 5000 = £1,000.

You could then deduct this £1,000 from your taxable earnings. Assuming you are a basic rate taxpayer this would mean a rebate of £1,000 x 20% = £200.

Tax is always complicated and very much depends on the facts so if you need further details I'd call your local HMRC office and explain the situation.

Driving to the place that you work is not tax deductible. Driving to different places from your place of work would be but as you get an allowance it is not. The idea is that we all have to go to work at an office, factory etc so you are responsible for getting yourself there. I have the same problem as a self employed tradesman. I can claim for vising customers to get work but once working at the premises then I have no claim for that journey.
Hope you get qualified as electrician is a good trade and if you are any good at it, a good money maker for being self employed.

Unless the laws have changed recently, No. You can get travel expenses to going to other places but not to your regular place of work.

Be grateful you get a travel allowance. Most of us dont!

How can you claim for driving to work if you already get a travelling allowance ?

I'm confused

I presume you claim travel costs via your employer so how can you claim twice,or am I mis understanding the question.

You don't say what your job is, or how much driving it entails?

Cornish Granny
No we all have to get ourselves to work either by car, train or bus. You cannot claim the cost of this from the taxman.

Short answer, No. If you are being taxed under the Paye sceme, then your journey from home to work and your base is not your home, is not classed as business miles.
Also, you can claim upto 40p per mile for the first ten thousand miles and 25p per mile thereafter. It is worth calling your tax office ... asking them for help with a mileage expense claim. Take a look at the example below, it might help.

I travel 11000 miles for work (excluding the home to work journey). My employer pays me a total sum of 3,000 a year in petrol expenses.

5,000 @ 40p per mile = 4000.
1,000 miles @25p per mile = 250
--------------------------------------...
relief can claim = 4250
Minus amount employer pays in allowance = 1250.
Total amount of allowance due = 1250

1250@ 20% (rate of tax - unless you are a 40% Taxpayer) = 250.

Refund due = 250.

Call your tax office and advise them you wish to make a claim for this. They will either send you a P87 form or advise you to write in with the details of your mileage etc...

A tax return is something you complete to let the HMRC (Inland Revenue's new name) what you earn so they can check you have paid the right amount of tax. You may be liable to pay more tax, or to get a rebate which they organise after they've looked at your tax return.

If you already get tax free additions, I shouldn't think you'd get more tax breaks, but you might.

Give them a call.
