Can i get my tax back?
I worked at my previous job full-time from march 2008 till august 2008 and earned around £4000 during that time, im now a student can i get my tax back for my last job? And why is there a different minimum wage for under 18's but we still have to pay the same tax and we cant vote, so have no say on where our taxes go?

Let's analyse this. No, you can't get a copy of form P45, employers are not allowed to issue duplicates. This is to prevent fraud. If you are a full-time student, why do you need one? It would be out of date before you get another job if it was more than 10 weeks since you left the last one.
What were you doing from 06/04/2007 until you started that job? Although you started in March 08, did you actually get a payday that year before 5th April? If so, you will have had form P60. If you had that, send it to tax office with full details of your employment history from previous 6th April, and ask for computation with any repayment due.
With regard to the tax you paid from 6th April 2008, it depends on your future plans what you can do. If you are planning to work, either part-time or vacation times only, depending on those plans, tax office could arrange to give new employer a cumulative code number with previous pay and tax so that he could make refund. If you aren't planning to work, or won't, say until Christmas, you can do form P50 claiming refund, and send to tax office. You should also send letter to say you have lost form P45. For the current tax year, you can earn £6035 before paying tax. For a mid-year repayment, it depends on your plans as to whether you can get a full repayment, or whether repayment is staggered monthly.
If after the new tax year, which starts on 06/04/2009, you intend working at vacation times only, ask employer form P38S, so that no tax will be deducted if you earn less than personal allowance. If you plan to work part-time, throughout the year, you will be treated as a normal employee.
Under 18s get paid less because they don't have the same work experience as older workers. You pay tax only on what you actually earn, and even those of us who do vote don't actually have any say on where our taxes go. Every potential Government makes promises, but never keeps them.

Yes you should be able to get that tax back. You will need to contact HMRC. Don't get into all that other stuff. When you are 18 get involved in politics.

DIXIE
The tax year runs from 5th April so any pay you received before then is in the tax year 2007/8 the rest is in the current tax year 2008/9

Whether you get a refund for 2006/7 depends on what else you earned in that period but eventually it will be sorted out

2008/9 hasn't ended yet so this time next year you my still be waiting for a refund

It ill ll catch up with itself in time you could try phoning or writing but I doubt it will make much difference.

Tirial
Yes. Ring the Inland Revenue and they can send you a form to fill out with all your income for the year. Then you get a rebate or a bill depending on how much you paid.

you shouldn't have paid tax because you didn't earn enough, i'd call the tax office a.s.ap

starlight
the only way to get a definate answer is to ring or go online to the inland revenue and ask
