The short answer is usually no. However as others have said, the exact rules depend upon the benefit you are getting. It would be useful if you could say what benefit you are getting as with DLA (Disabilty Living Allowance) for example, the answer is yes. Sid |

it all depends what benefit you are receiving.
if you claim job seekers allowance you are allowed to earn a measly 5 pounds a week. anything above this is taken from your benefit. |

It depends on which benefit you are on.
With some benefits you can work under 16 hours a week and still receive benefits, with others you can only earn a certain amount weekly.
You need to phone the job centre and ask one of there advisers. |

No, you are not a work shy sponger. It is very conscientious, and upright to enquire whether you can work and receive benefits. In fact, this is what the country needs! If the system allowed people to work and receive benefits, there would not be so many on benefits now. It is a nonsense for the system to dish out money to people and DISCOURAGE them from working x hours a week.
In fact I believe everyone on Jobseekers Allowance should be forcefully put into doing some kind of work, out of which their JSA would be deducted and they keep the balance. No question on whether it is worth getting out of bed for it or not. If they are forced to work (99.99% will not like what they ae given to do), you will see how fast they find work of their own choice - part-time, full-time, quarter-time, moonlighting whatever!... ! But then the system would need to be flexible and remove the current restrictions on working hours.
I am on JSA and I would welcome this deduction from what I earn. And yes I would get out of bed for it if only for me not be a statistic and labled a sponger...!

You are allowed to work but the system is screwed.
I think you can work up to 16 hours but you only get to keep £10 a week of your wage. If you earn anymore it comes out of the benefits you receive. It's something very close to that anyway.
My suggestion would be to not work at all or go full time and hope that tax credits can help you cover rent and council tax. If they don't then there's not much point. |

No you cannot, it is illegal to have a paid job and to recieve benefits!
well you could, but if you got caught then you would get fined or locked up!
you could try it, if your job was not through the books and you were paid cash in hand. But this is ILLEGAL. |
