You should have a written contract of employment and the only way you can have your wages cut is if the job changes and you accept another role

Yes they can but should consult you first. You have to realise that many firms due to poor trading results have two options facing them, cut the number of staff, or cut the wages a bit and keep their staff in employment. They would normally consult the staff.
The other scenario is where someone is on a performance based pay scale, if they do not perform then their wages can/will be cut. But again, they will be told why. |

If you are on a set pay and its in your contract your employer should give you notice and consult with you/the union. If you dont like what he does you can let him know in writing and work 'under protest'. But if he doesnt change it, then youre only real choice is to accept it or leave. if the wage cut makes it, for example, impossible for you to pay your rent, or to travel to work, you can leave and claim constructive dismissal (ie you had no choice but to leave because he made it intolerable) but this is the most difficult thing to prove at a tribunal which is what youd have to do if you wanted any compensation. |

No he can not just cut your wages, you have a contract of employment even if you have not signed one , the day he paid you your first weeks wages and stated the hours on the pay slip that is enough to take legal action, but the employer can consult with you and say that he has to cut your wages and give a reason , which you can accept or not , may I suggest that you contact your union , failing that google acas the have a free help line for employment law. |
