as long as you live in their home for at least 6 months out of the year they can claim you ! at any age, but only if you do not claim yourself ! the reason is you can only claim your ss number once each tax season ! hope this helped !

See IRS publication 501 regarding dependents. You are not under the age of 19, you are not a full time student under the age of 24, so you do not fall under the rules of "Qualifying Child"
Now, let's move on to the rules of "Qualifying Relative" Page 13
Your parents fail to meet the gross income test. You have made more than $3400. File your return correctly. Claim your own exemption.

DJ C
at this point you have to be a full time student in college or else they cant.

JFH
If you earned under $3,300 or are a full time student, your parents can and should claim you as a dependent. The cut off is 20 and 24 for full time students.

They can take you as an exemption if you earned less than #3,300, they contributed to more than 1/2 your support and you lived with them for the entire year and you do not file a joint return, unless you are filing for a refund.when you are not required to file.

If you are 20 and weren't a student for some part of at least five months of 2007, then they can't claim you. It would be a good idea to talk to them about this so they know they can't - they can check that out with the IRS or with any competent tax preparer, or just read the instruction book on who can be claimed as a dependent. If they do claim you and you also claim yourself, they and you will each receive a letter from the IRS telling you that two people claimed the same person, and saying that whoever didn't have the right to the claim needs to file an amended return dropping the claim - then if nobody does, they'll investigate and decide who gets the exemption. The other person will have to pay back whatever he got by making the claim he wasn't entitled to, with interest and possible penalties.

well if they are still supporting you then they can still claim you until you are 21 i think however if you have a job and want them to not claim you that is your decision

my parents claimed me at 20 before i moved out. i wasn't a full time student.

omnisource
They can claim you as a dependant forever, unless you (or someone else) file and claim your individual deduction. In other words, there's just ONE deduction for YOU, whether you or your parents claim it depends on who provides for your support for six months or more of the tax year.
So there really isn't a 'cut-off' age.

lovindavid
yeah the can claim you i want to say like till your 23 or 24?

If they pay more than 50% of your care they can claim you.

earanger
Jacob,

I believe they can claim you at 20, only if you're a student and you don't have an income.
Our son is 19, and we're dealing with this.
If you're not a student the cut off is 18.

UPDATE:
Jacob, if you made $14K, taxes are being taken out of your pay, under your Social Security Number. In that case you HAVE to file a 1040.

Boomer
Typically it is age 18 unless you are in school. However if they provide for you and you do not file your taxes as head of household, then you can be a dependent forever. There is no cut-off age; it is regarding support. If they do support you, then they may claim you as a dependent; because you are.

yes, they can claim u till u are 25

RP
You can only be claimed as a dependent if you are under the age of 19 or up to the age of 24 if you are a full time student. That is the IRS guidelines.
