Not unless you have granted them power of attorney. Tax forms require your signature.

maxmom56
Anyone who knows your social security number can file forms with the IRS. It's not legal but it could be done.

Not in the US. Your signature must be on the form.

Legally no, but it would be possible for someone to e-file a return if they had enough of your personal information to do so. This is one HUGE security issue that is not adequately addressed by the IRS' E-File system.

Sunnie -
No, because your sig needs to be on the forms.
That's illegal.

Under normal circumstances, No. You have to sign the form(s). Illegally, yes. Forge your signature on the forms. You'll know when you get the surprise invite to the IRS auditing party.

Abnormal circumstances, yes. In the event of the death of one of the spouses, the surviving spouse gets the deduction for the year of death, but includes a death certificate. Obviously no signature is available.

Power of Attorney for someone who is not mentally competent to file taxes. They many not even know what's going on.

Judy1
No, you need to sign the return or a form that says you efiled. If someone signed your name to a return, that's forgery.

quizzard123
No, and why would they? Any refund check comes in your name.

Clark Kent
Yes, but they would be committing a crime.

A parent, guardian, conservator, or someone with a power of attorney
can, and sometimes must, do it for you.
Otherwise, no.

frak1a12345
I agree with Sunni--you have to sign the return so how somebody could do file on your behalf I don't know.

John M
yes, but they would have to sign the form if they filed by paper.

You can always amend your tax return. Just fill it out the way you want and send it in with an amended return form.

My son called me tonight because his ex girlfriend got a state refund check and couldn't cash it. She thought she could obviously. This means she must have filed the return since he knew nothing about it. He did not realize he would of gotten anything back as he is not good with tax info. He did not work that much but they do have a child together. I know how easy it can be to do a return online and e-sign it. There is no actual signature fgs! If she had the $ direct deposited into someone's account he probably would never have known.....big problem with e-filing. I am giving him the ph number for local irs office in am so that he can call and report what was done and hopefully intercept any fed return that might be coming.
