You would boost the economy if you went out and spent your rebate. Stores would move more product and either hire or keep more employees who would spend more money and so on.

If you use your rebate to pay bills, it accomplishes the same thing just a bit slower.

It's not going to work and it is the most idiotic plan I have ever heard of. First you get your rebate of $300 up to $1200 and then you are suppose to go out and spend it at a retail store somewhere. The trouble is most people are so far in debt that they will most likely just pay some bills. What the heck is wrong with our government??????????????????????????

In reality, I doubt if it will boost the economy at all. Most people that get the rebate will pay the mortgage, car payment, visa card, or buy groceries. It stands to reason if the population of the country are in such dire straits, they will do the most intelligent thing and look after the debts before going out and buying a wide screen. Apparently the government body who had this great idea have never been behind in a payment...???

That my dear is the $64,000 question! It doesn't.

It doesn't truly stimulate (IMO) long term. But one can stimulate their local economy by BUYING LOCAL!!

Going into the walmart, best buy etc down the street isn't going to do anything long term to bring the states back up to par. Most of the profit is going to go right back overseas where the items are made!

The theory is that everyone will run out and buy some things they wouldn't have otherwise bought, so sales will be up, jobs will be created, etc etc etc. That's the theory anyway.

More spending power?

There is one truism in the economy:

"Give poor people money and they will spend it!"

In trying to raise spending, well $600 per person will likely rase spending by an good amount. Maybe $400 on average?

Yes, many will pay bills, but with $600 less in bills, most will be more likely to buy something else anyway.

I am thinking what I'm gonna do with my $600. Is this the be all end all, but the idea that we spend more and it helps businesses and they fire less or hire more. It's a positive push.

More than anyting else, the idea of it - convincing people that they are working on turning things around, actually does a fair bit of good in it's own right.

Mary
It's not going to.

$300/$600 isn't going to miraculously fix the economy. They are stupid.

As for the guy that said, "Give poor ppl money and they'll spend it." Wow, how ignorant can you be? There are a ton of poor ppl in this country and they are doing their best to feed themselves and their family. It's not always bc they go out and blow their money, it's called low wages and fkn inflation, ppl cant afford anything! I don't even fall into the "poor" catergory and I was somewhat offended by this. You truly are an idiot, aren't you?
