Can teens file taxes if they work?
my daughter thinks she can file taxes at 16 and carry her daughter

I gotta jump in here.

If teen earned money over the standard deduction amount, she will need to file a return no matter what.

Does she have a dependent child? Well you've brought up a big issue. First you have to determine who is supporting WHOM.

If your daughter (the teen) is fully supporting the baby and you are supporting the teen more than 50%, you have an improper chain. If the teen is sipporting herself and her baby, then she will file as a NON-dependent taxpayer.

If you are supporting the teen more than 50%, then you will claim BOTH the teen and the grandbaby.

DEPENDENTS CANNOT HAVE DEPENDENTS!

Teens can file taxes. They just can't claim themselves if you claim them as a dependent.

I had my tax guy figure her tax return two ways, if she claimed herself and if I claimed her.

I got a better return than she would have gotten, so I gave her the difference.

She absolutely should file. If she is your dependent, she can not claim herself, but she still can claim her own child, unless there is a legal arrangement stating otherwise (between you and her, her and father of baby, etc). If she works part time, chances are, she will still get money back, either way.

When she files her own taxes, that does not mean you can not claim her as a dependent. You still get that right, as long as she is either living in your home, or she is going to school, and you are paying for it.

Yes, she can but that means you can't claim her. If you claim her you must also claim her income.

If your daughter had income, then she can file. If her income is high enough, she might be required to file.

If she can be claimed by you as a dependent, then she can't claim her daughter, since someone who IS a dependent can't CLAIM a dependent.

If your daughter lived with you for over half the year, and didn't provide more than half of her own support, and isn't married and filing a joint return with her husband, then you can probably claim her. If so, then she can't claim her daughter. If they're both living with you and you are mostly supporting them, then you could probably claim your granddaughter also.

Yes, she should.

Why not, I used to as a teenager. I'd get a few hundred bucks back. And what's this in your question, and carry her daughter? Does your 16 year old daughter have a daughter? Do they live with you? Do you privide more than 50% of her care?

I think when I was younger, my mom still claimed me, but I got money back from my own W-2's. Plus, my mm would always give me some of the money she got from the child tax credit she recieved from claiming me.

Even as a teen - you have to show that you have made a significant salary in order to pay taxes. My daughter worked her first year and earned only $2000. Our tax man said - she did not have to file. Wanting to be certain- I called the IRS directly. Though I had to wait a longgggggggggggggggg time on the phone - it was worth it to KNOW the truth as opposed to her not filing and then finding herself in the 'autoloop" of being audited. Don't take anything to chance - CALL them and ask for yourself.
