Idunno | Can the government garnish my fed tax refund check ? |
I have some federal college loan's. I haven't paid on them yet, but it hasn't been a year since I received the loans. So this tax season, do you think they would take my tax refund ? |

Yes. If you owe back taxes, student loans, child support, and you have not responded to their letters and made arrangements with them, the IRS will keep your refund. |

Yes, they can. They can also garnish your wages if you don't start paying. My boyfriend has had both happen to him. He hasn't seen a refund in years. |

Probably will not this year, but eventually, You should first get a notice of default, and then some notice of garnishment. |

Federal college loan, the subsidized one has a grace period of 6 months from the time that you enter repayment period. Repayment period starts when you're in-school with 6 credits or less.
If it has only been 1 year since you received the loans, chances are you're probably has just entered the repayment period, assuming that you're a half-time or less student this term.
Government won't garnish your tax refund check. The loan companies will have to report you to the credit bureaus, etc for multiple deliquencies before they can take your tax refund checks. |

yes, they can garnish it. so can any state agency. I doubt they will unless you become seriously behind. |

not if you're not in repayment status; and even then, it takes a long time to be considered in default. So you should get your refund; but get the loan repayments set up asap. |

Not this year next. But they will. Why not work out n agreement with the Departement of Education. |

Like the others have said, if you have defaulted on the loan, and if they IRS has been notified, only then will your tax refunds be kept. In the event of any refund offset, you will receive a notice from the National Financial Center advising you of the amount of the refund offset, and to whom it was given. This happens most often in the event of back child support, student loans or debts owed to any other agency of the federal government. |
