Can two people file head of household?

CogitoErgoCogitoSum
Under law (if not religious doctrine) arent a married couple considered one person? One flesh. Equally responsible for the actions of one another? Mutually dependent. Equal partners. In all domestic matters, just so long as they're actions are legal.

wartz
Yes, if they live in different houses. Heads of household come at the rate of one each.

No, not if they live in the same household.

Not if they live in the same household. Filing head of household in includes a requirement that the person has provided over half of the cost of keeping up the household. It's impossible for TWO people to each have paid more than half of the costs of the same household.

lorianngie
If there are two individuals living in the same house, each with their own child, and each paying all their own expenses and those of their own child, could both or either taxpayer be eligible to file using the head of household filing status?

Yes. One or both taxpayers may qualify for the head of household filing status if each of them met all of the qualification requirements for the status. One of the requirements is that the taxpayer paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the taxpayer and his or her own child. If each family maintained separate finances and did not contribute to the support of the other family, each family may be treated as keeping up a separate home.

No, not if they are married and living together.

To file as Head of Household you must be unmarried and pay more than half the cost of maintaining a home and a qualifying person must live in the home with you.

If two unmarried people are living together it is mathematically impossible for each of them to pay more than half of the cost of maintaining the household. Since the rules say MORE THAN HALF, only ONE may claim HoH filing status even if they each support a qualifying person that would qualify them to file as HoH if they had lived apart. And if you each paid EXACTLY half of the cost, neither of you could claim HoH filing status.

Edit: Looks like someone let the trolls out tonight. LOL!

Or move to a country that doesn't require you to file as 'head' of anything.

In Canada, we don't have to declare who the head of the house is, we just declare who our spouse is, and report their net income on our tax form.

claudiacake
Not jointly. The filing distinction is Single Head of Household, the operative word being single.

Edit: David F. you misunderstand. Filing Head of Household is a filing distinction that allows a single head of household with dependents to pay less taxes than a single person without dependents, or a family with two incomes to report. It is a good thing for a single parent.
