I am in the process of getting this paid but they had to go ahead with the filing of the "warrant" against me. Can I be arrested or anything if I get pulled over or something? They told me at the Department of Revenue that it is a "lien" on me or my business, which I ended last year but the paperwork was supposedly never received.(always my luck) I do owe for the taxes but not near as much as they say. I am just worried about what the warrant means.
Additional Details
I own nothing and I have spoke to them and I am paying the money I do owe which is under $1000.00...not $7000.00 which is their estimate. It was for taxes on a newspaper route(not home del) that I ended last year when I became pregnant. |

They are not going to arrest you unless you are doing some tax evasion. A lien means that that have a right to the selling and buying power you and your business have. They are just taking means to get paid. They can also start garnishing wages too. But you won't get arrested.
By the way, a warrant does not mean they are going to arrest you, as one previous answerer stated. |

No, so don't panic....but lien's on your home are a bad deal, as with on your business. You very well should consult a tax attorney or a CPA. Never, ever, EVER lose or otherwise dispose of paperwork involving taxes, legal documents and such. Lesson learned. |

The word 'warrant' has different meanings and uses. The tax warrant is not an arrest warrant, but a notice that you owe a debt and that a tax 'lien' can (and will) be placed on any property you own, as an eventual guarantee that Uncle Sam will get his due. Of course a very negative aspect of it, is that it's a debt due. It shows up on your credit report. It's a matter of public record (if it goes to lien) at your county recorder's office, so a title company or anyone else for that matter can observe that you owe the government money and how much. So your plan to pay it off or reach an agreement with the government for a payoff plan is very smart on your part. Good luck to you on that. |
