If someone qualifies as your dependent while in the USA, they still qualify while oversees. If your child is studying abroad, or visiting another country, you may claim them as a dependent. However, you can not claim someone that would not be your dependent here. Sponsoring an orphan in Africa, for example would not apply. In order to qualify as a dependent on tax return, they must have their own Social Security number. |

To be claimed as a qualifying child, the child must live with you for over half the year.
To be claimed as a qualifying relative, not a qualifying child, the child must either be a US citizen, US resident alien, US national, or a resident of Canada or Mexico for some part of the year |

I don't believe you can. I believe the child has to be living with you in order to be claimed on your taxes. But I am not positive on this. You might want to ask someone at H&R Block or look it up online. |

You can only claim a child if you have full physical custody.
I was hoping my boyfriend could claim his child because the large amount he pays in child support. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.

In theory, yes. But in practice this would be hard to do.
You need documentary proof of everything. And if the documents are from another country. Then you have to get a notarized translation of each and every document. And you have to get each document certified by the US embassy in that foreign country. |
