Can you claim for Work Clothes?

a friend at work has told me that you can claim for your work clothes through the tax office. he states that you are entitled to Â£60 per year and can recieve backpay for the last 6 years. he said it was linked to a law made in the 1930s. during the great depression. IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THIS???

There are fixed rate expense allowances for most trades. The allowance is agreed between HMRC and the unions, but you dont have to be a union member to get the allowance. Go to www.hmrc.gov.uk and search for fixed rate deductions. Look up your trade there and then write to your tax office making your claim. You can claim back up to 6 years, provided you were doing that job for that time.

I think it only applies if you have to wear a uniform. My partner used to work in Asda and got a Â£60 tax allowance to have his uniforms laundered. However his company never told him about this we wrote to our local tax office directly.

How it works is;

If your employer provides you with uniform AND doesn't wash them for you, you can clam a certain amount from your work to keep them clean.

What basically happens if your tax letters like ,BR( Emerancy tax) ETC, Changes to something that shows that your receiving the extra money to wash your uniform

Its 100% true and my mother found out through a friend & she claimed it in TESCO. Do it does work, its just one of these things people forgot about.

I know you can claim for dry cleaning (if your job requires you to wear a uniform). It probably amounts to the same value!

when you are self employed you need receipt for every think as my accountant would not put it through other wise yes i claimed for work clothes

Probably only applies to the self employed

if they need to buy, and wear protective clothing

I work from home and cannot even claim a heating and lighting

allowance, which is rubbish

However I'll be interested to read the others answers
